Summoning a horse in Elden Ring is not as difficult as one might think. The following provides an easy step-by-step guide on how to go about it.
If you are more of a visual learner, be sure to check out the YouTube video I made on this topic:
In case you were wondering, your horse in Elden Ring is named Torrent. You’ll be able to summon your horse in the open world which helps you get from place to place and will also help you defeat enemies easier (I’m looking at you giants).
Unfortunately, you can’t summon Torrent in Dungeons or smaller caves but other than that, having a horse that can double-jump is a nice edition to the Souls-style games.
With all that being said, let’s dive in how to get your horse in Elden Ring, how to summon your horse, and some other tips that will help. Let’s dive in!

How to Get the Horse in Elden Ring?
To get the horse in Elden Ring (named Torrent), you need to speak to the Maiden Melina.
She appears at the third Site of Grace that you rest at. If you are like most players, this will most likely be at the Gatefront Ruins which is the third Site of Grace you reach if you follow the light trails.
Once you rest at this third Site of Grace, she visits you and offers you an accord allowing you to level up at Sites of Grace.
She also grants you another gift, the Spectral Steed Whistle, which leads us to our next section.
How to Summon the Horse in Elden Ring?
In order to summon your horse in Elden Ring, you need to use the spectral Steed Whistle that Melina gives you.
There are two ways to use this whistle.
Two Ways to Use Spectral Steed Whistle
Go to Equipment Screen
The first way you can use it is to go to your equipment, click on the whistle, and hit use. The problem with this option is that after a while, going to the equipment menu, finding the whistle, and then clicking on use can take a while.
Equip it to Pouch
The better way is to open up your pouch by clicking on the start menu, going to the right, and equipping the whistle to one of your quick slots.
The quick slots in your pouch is controlled by the D-Pad. Now once it’s in a quick slot, you simply hit “Y” if on Xbox or “Triangle” if on Playstation and you will see your quick slots on the bottom left of your screen.
Can Your Horse Die in Elden Ring?
No, your horse cannot permanently die in Elden Ring. However, if it takes too much damage, it will be disappear as it has its own separate health bar apart from yours.
If this happens, you can re-summon your horse after about 9 seconds but you’ll need to spend an HP flash to resurrect it. You can also rest at a Site of Grace to bring your horse back as well.
How to Heal Your Horse in Elden Ring?
In order to heal your horse (Torrent), you can feed it a Rowa Raisin which is crafted from the Rowa Fruits. It’s good to have a few of these on hand at all times especially if you are fighting a fairly strong enemy such as a giant or dragon and you are using your horse for the movement advantage in combat.
Can You Customize or Upgrade Your Horse in Elden Ring?
I’m sorry to say to all you “Fashion Soul” fans out there that you cannot customize or upgrade your horse in Elden Ring. There is no option to upgrade its stats, give it new armor, or change its name. Torrent is just Torrent — but we’re fine with that!
Can You Take Fall Damage on Your Horse?
If you are on your horse and you attempt a big drop, then you and your horse will die.
If it is a drop that is less big but still enough to cause fall damage, then yes you will receive fall damage. One tip though is that since Torrent has a double-jump ability, one way to prevent this is to activate that second jump right before you hit the ground — but just like anything in a Souls-like game, this requires good timing.
How to Attack on Your Horse?
When attacking on your horse, you can attack either from the right or left side of your horse.
To attack on the right side, use R1/RB for light attacks and RT/R2 for heavy attacks.
To attack on the left side, use L1/LB for light attack and LT/L2 for heavy attacks.
On your horse, you cannot block, parry, or use any Ashes of War.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Torrent is a trusty horse companion, and once you unlock him/her, then it allows you to experience the world of The Lands Between. Good luck and keep double-jumping!
